Using a controller

Connect your controller to the Mac as usual (Bluetooth or USB) before or during the game. These work: Xbox (Series, One, 360, Elite), PlayStation (DualSense, DualShock 4), Switch Pro and 8BitDo pads.

  • Games see your pad the way Windows games expect, whichever way they ask for it. A PlayStation pad shows up as an Xbox-style pad in most games; games made for PlayStation pads still recognise it.
  • Rumble works, and so do two pads at once.
  • Turning a pad off and on, or unplugging and plugging it back in, mid-game is fine: the game gets it back.
  • Each pad shows up in the game exactly once. (Steam Input's own button remapping doesn't apply to Windows games on a Mac.)
  • The first time a controller connects in a game, a short hint says how to open the overlay (the Xbox button).
  • Battery: games that ask for the pad's battery get it, and the overlay (and the HUD from level 3) shows it. A short notice appears in game when a pad runs low.
  • Your own layout, per game (the game's Settings › Controller, or Controls in the overlay): remap any button, swap the sticks (Southpaw), use Nintendo button positions, set stick and trigger dead zones, invert, or show any pad to the game as an Xbox controller (Xbox button icons). Changes apply while you play.
  • PlayStation features (off by default, per game, from the next launch): the DualSense or DualShock 4 shows up as itself, with gyro, touchpad, light bar and, on the DualSense, adaptive triggers, for games that use them. Games that only know Xbox pads won't see the pad while this is on.
